Nonprofits want Grandmother Fish
almost 9 years ago – Mon, Jun 29, 2015 at 09:08:25 AM

Thanks to, you, our generous backers, we have 119 copies of Grandmother Fish to hand out to nonprofits. The following education-oriented nonprofits are happy to take copies for their work. I’m flattered that these prestigious institutions see value in Grandmother Fish.

  • Camp Quest
  • Centre for Inquiry Canada
  • Evolution Institute
  • Harvard Humanist Hub
  • National Center for Science Education

Now we need 13 more copies to give these organizations all the copies that they asked for. Can you help? For the next week, I’ve dropped the price on donated books to $14.95. That’s 25% off. Can you preorder a gift book? Or share the link with people who can? I’d love to see these supportive organizations get all the books that they asked for.

This week: 25% off.

Grandmother Fish, final PDF
almost 9 years ago – Wed, Jun 24, 2015 at 01:01:56 PM

Grandmother Fish is at the printer, and we can now share with you a PDF of the book with the final art. Karen has done a wonderful job with the art, putting more time into it than either of us had expected. We’re very excited to share the final version of the book with you. Here is a page that you’ve never seen in color before.

And here is the URL to the entire PDF.

Next we will provide the book in ebook formats, and the physical books will be back from the printer in early August. Now that we have the final art, we can also create the sticker sheets, bookmarks and limited edition prints that many of you are receiving. It’s going to be an exciting summer for Grandmother Fish!

We are looking for education-oriented nonprofits to which we can donate over 100 copies of Grandmother Fish. We have 35 designated for Camp Quest, and we are looking for other organizations, too. If you know of an organization that could use copies of the first book to teach evolution to preschoolers, let us know!

When the physical book goes out to backers and it’s available on Amazon, we hope you will help us get the word out about Grandmother Fish. In the meantime, please let friends know that they can preorder the book now. Here’s the URL for you to share.

Grandmother Fish Is at the Printer
almost 9 years ago – Thu, Jun 04, 2015 at 09:31:02 AM

Today Karen uploaded the final files to our printer, and I mailed them their check yesterday. Pretty soon it will be printing. This quick message is going out to backers only. Soon enough I'll make an official announcement on social media and everywhere, but I wanted you to know right away. Thanks for your support.

Grandmother Fish May Update
almost 9 years ago – Sat, May 30, 2015 at 09:28:16 PM

Karen and I have a looked at the art that remains to be done, and it sure looks like we ought to be finished by the end of May. There will be unforeseen delays, but unless something crazy happens, we will go to the printer in June. So that means that domestic backers will get books in August, and we can hope for July. International shipping, obviously, will take longer. Thanks again for your patience.

Karen has set a high standard for herself on the quality of the art. There’s a relatively small amount of art left, but she is taking care with each little piece. We are disappointed to be behind schedule, but we are going to have higher quality art as result.

My business consultant, Jeff, is a typography expert. He and Karen spent hours finalizing the look of the text, and it looks sharp. The text is now all but finalized. Here’s a photo of Karen and Jeff hard at work in Karen’s studio.

For editing help, I called on an old friend, Beverly. She not only proofed the text but also helped me work through a sentence that covers a tricky concept about ancestry. Now I’m more confident in the text than ever. Beverly first edited my work over 20 years ago, and I’m grateful to have her help.

Meanwhile, my work on Grandmother Fish might lead to my doing a new book for children about climate change. Climate change seems to be the big scientific issue of the day, and many of the science communicators who talk about evolution also talk about climate change. This new book is a possibility only because of the support you gave me on Grandmother Fish, so thank you again.
